Barring an unlikely rebound in the final three quarters of the football season, with Texas Tech, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Texas looming, Byrne will be faced with another crucial hire and rebuilding task.
This one, simply, will define his legacy at the school.
Franchione, even Byrne must realize by now, is not a catalyst as forecast when he was imported to take the reins of the football program. Advertised as an agent for change, instead he stands today as arguably the most prominent example of underachievement in the university's history.
A nice enough man, firm with a handshake and well coiffed in front of the cameras, he looks the part. But the results say otherwise.
It's an act that's wearing awfully thin at A&M, where hopes continually soar far higher than mediocre. Give the Aggies credit: They aspire to greatness, now more than ever.
It's a passion, however, that works against Franchione today. Hired to lift A&M's program to national prominence, he still can't seem to lift it higher than R.C. Slocum's memory.
That's why the most important game plan for the school today is the one stewing in Byrne's head.
I think this guy hits it right on the head. Fran continues to make calls that are at best puzzling and he seems to ruin every passing quarterback we get our hands on. Darnell has improved the defense a little bit, but we don't seem to have progress much this past season. His hire was another of those puzzling calls on Fran's part.
RC did a great job at keeping us from getting embarrassed, and maybe we wanted to take a few more chances offensively and try to take it to the next level, but maybe we shouldn't have thrown the baby out with the bath water. Right now I'd love to just have a dominating defense, even if we couldn't score.
